A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
