Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the prestigious trophy on 14 separate times.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 seasons.
